Children's Stories
L. Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York in 1856. Because of a weak heart, he was
unable to run and play like most children and spent much of his time visiting imaginary places with
his imaginary friends. His adult life was rich and varied. He was a chicken farmer, magazine editor,
actor, theater owner, merchant, and a salesman before becoming a full-time writer. His most famous
work, The Wizard of Oz, was published in 1900 and became an instant hit with readers of all ages.
Baum died in 1919.
